Case Study: Global Chief Development Officer in Abu Dhabi
A targeted international search for a Global Chief Development Officer on behalf of a top-five GCC residential developer, resulting in a high-quality three-candidate shortlist and a successful appointment now seven months into post.
Client Overview
A leading real estate developer headquartered in Abu Dhabi, consistently ranked among the top five residential developers across the GCC. The business operates at scale, partnering with internationally recognised luxury brands and global development partners to deliver landmark residential and mixed-use projects across the region and beyond.
The Challenge
The organisation required a Global Chief Development Officer capable of operating at the highest level of a complex, internationally facing business. The ideal candidate needed to demonstrate a track record of delivering comparable quality and scale elsewhere in the world, whilst also navigating the specific commercial and stakeholder landscape of Abu Dhabi, including engagement with shareholders and government ministers. Critically, the appointment required someone who, though new to the region, could demonstrate the international credibility and cultural agility to hit the ground running.
Our Approach
Leadership
This search was led by Tom Brooks, our Saudi Arabia Country Lead, bringing extensive experience placing executive-level talent across the GCC and international real estate markets.
Methodology
-
Targeted international mapping: We identified candidates from developers of comparable scale and brand positioning globally, focusing on individuals with demonstrable experience delivering luxury, mixed-use schemes in partnership with international operators and brands.
-
Stakeholder alignment process: Given the seniority of the role and the need for ministerial and shareholder engagement, we facilitated multiple structured meetings to ensure alignment on both professional capability and cultural fit within the Abu Dhabi context.
-
Regional transition assessment: Candidates were rigorously assessed not only on their development credentials but on their readiness and adaptability to transition into a new geography, with clear evidence of international mobility and cross-cultural leadership evaluated throughout.

Key Success Factors
A tightly targeted international search, combined with a structured stakeholder engagement process, ensured the appointed candidate possessed both the global development credentials and the interpersonal gravitas required for a high-profile leadership role in the Abu Dhabi market. The quality of the shortlist, with all three candidates progressing to interview, reflects the precision of the methodology employed.
